'01101001' is an augmented reality effect originally created for Meta using Spark Studio. The effect transforms the camera feed into a pixelated black-and-white pattern resembling a data matrix. The visual experience was designed drawing inspiration from the digital aesthetics of QR codes and algorithms. This effect is more than just a visual treatment; it's a monochromatic poetic exploration. The black and white contrast is an abstract symbol of binary codes, the fundamental language of computers, represented by the simple digits 0 and 1. As users interact with this effect, the scenes and people around them are abstracted into a grid of black-and-white squares, reducing them to their most elemental digital form. This creates a striking visual of how we, as humans, can metaphorically be seen through a technological lens. Likening humans to machines, and machines to humans, is a theme that frequently appears in my work.
Originally titled "I C0NTA!N MULT!TUDES," this effect reflects the complexity and depth inherent in each person, akin to the layers of information hidden beneath the surface of digital codes. Just as QR codes and algorithms carry vast amounts of data, each individual holds a world of traits. Uniquely, everyone is complex and contains various attributes that are not visible or known on the surface level. We require some exploration to uncover what lies behind each other's faces.
The title '01101001' itself translates to the letter "i" in binary code, emphasizing the connection between the digital and the personal, and inviting you to explore the intersection of human and machine.
